PLAN
What I'd like to achieve/learn:

I'd like to produce a portfolio/exhibition showing around 25 pieces of editorial photography, at the end of my project I'd like to have learnt new tips which would help me toward achieving higher quality photos which would look better in my personal portfolio and in the future applying for jobs. One thing that may hold me back from achieving 25 photos is booking the studio as the college only has 2 studios with a lot of students wanting to use it as well, this could be resolved by using a variety of backgrounds if i couldn't get the studio more than once. Another thing that may hold me back is booking my models as both have a very busy schedule and finding a time when I have free time and they do can be quite difficult.

Resourses needed:
Model: Lucinda, Sophie and Hannah
Editing software: Photoshop
Camera: SLR
Location: Studio

Shoot Plan:

  • My first shoot I'm hoping to book the college's studio and experiment with poses and the body.
  • I'd like to have a range of close ups and full body shots so i can choose between both, I'm also interested in trying both white background and black background.
  • I'd like to experiment with angles, and I'd like to try out with birds eye view.
  • I'd like this shoot to focus on fashion as editioral is popular with fashion shoots and I'd love to try out editorial as I'd never had a chance, as I havn't done editorial photography yet I will need to look at other photographers work and look online for tips and tricks.
  • I love 'Micheal Robert Williams' and I'd love to look into his work and hopfully I'll be inspired by him.
  • As I will be using the studio it will be un-natural light this will add to the editorial effect and make the photo look more interesting even if it's a boring background.

Problems I came across – My original model that I’ve worked with a lot before is unable to do this shoot and had to cancel on me at last minute so I had to find a new model but this meant I hadn’t worked with them and I didn’t know what would work with them and what wouldn’t but in the end it worked to my advantage in a way as I had 3 different models which meant I would get a range of photo’s but some photo’s I found looked quite crowded.

Problems I came across – A lot of my images were too similar to use altogether so I had to leave some out. In the end I managed to pick quite a lot and I may have to cut down the amount.

PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT INSPIRE ME
Micheal Robert Williams
Micheal bases his work on music and fashion which is one of the many reasons he inspires me - he uses alot of celebrities for models which i can't do but i can use his work to make my own.

A few of his photo's:
Daisy Dares You Portrait
Daisy dares you.
  • I love the effect of the shadowing in the picture and the way it adds to the contrast - The photographer has defiantly thought hard about the lighting in this photo. By the look of the shadows in this photo you can see that Micheal has used un-natural lighting which i will be as well. The angle of the model is really effective as it uses the whole frame without filling it. Micheal has used a large depth of field for this photo which works well i don't feel it would work if it used a shallow depth of field.

Daisy Dares You Portrait
Again Daisy dares you
  • I love the effect of the eyes in this photo and how your attention is immediately dragged to them - as well as the light on her hair. Micheal again has used un-natural lighting in this photo which highlights the models (daisy dares you) face. The use of shallow depth of field again wouldn't work for this photo so again the photo is using a wide depth of field.

Josh Ritter Portrait
Josh Ritter
  • Again you are drawn to his face - the Micheal has centred Josh's face which works well but also  it doesn't allow you to look around the photo and let your eyes explore. This photo is hard to tell if Micheal has used large un-natural lighting or natural as it's taken outide but it has no shadows, because of the shadow situation i'm guessing it has been taken in un-natural lighting but i may be wrong. He has used a large depth of field as the whole photo is in focus.
After looking at Micheals work I have picked up a few pointers:
  • Don't centre the face unless i have filled the photo.
  • Think about where the light is and where the shadows and shine are going to be.

Meagan Cignoli
Meagan Cignoli is an internationally renowned Fashion and Portrait Photographer. Her various editorials and portraits have resulted in over 350 published pages, in over 40 publications. She shoots her diverse list of portrait, fashion and commercial clients out of her studio in downtown NYC and on location across the globe. Meagan's work can be found on gallery walls throughout the US and has been wildly documented on the web.
Some of her photo's:

  • I love the use of space in this photo and the elegance in her face. This photo has been taken in un-natural lighting and wouldn't be as effective if it was in natural. Meagan has used a large depth of field to keep the whole photo in focus so you can see the detail on the dress. Meagan has also used a fast shutter speed you can see this by the movement in the models dress.

Again i love the space used in this photo, I also love the sort of cartoon comedy to it. Meagan has used un-natual lighing once again in this photo, it uses a large depth of field which keeps the whole photo in focus.

This is defiantly my favourite shot so far! The space is really effective and you get to look around the photo. It also has a sort of vintage look to it which i adore. This photo uses natural lighting which is uncommon in fashion photography and has been taken in the middle of the day to minimise shadows, Meagan has used a shallow depth of field which you can see as the background at the top is unfocused.

Ansres Hernandez

Some of his photo's:

  • Although this is the only photo that inspires me i think the space and light is great, and like the photo above it uses natural lighting.

Özlem Haluk
"Özlem Haluk is a photographer based out of the UK. Her work could be described as whimsy, intimate, and nostalgic. Viewers are invited to look and look again. Hints of deeper undertones, intrigue, and interpretation are certainly key impressions one comes away with when studying her images. Her style bounces from cinematic visual storytelling, to experimental, to glimpses of what appear to be beautifully captured moments of the mundane." - Photographyblog.net

Some of her work:
BitterSweet
Bitter Sweet
This photo really creates a story - which can keep the viewer interested for longer. For example even if you've seen the photo your eyes want to keep coming back! The photographer has really thought about the location of this photo as it wouldn't work as well if it was a plain background! This photographer has used un-natural lighting in this photo - although the photographer hasn't used any professional studio lighting she has used normal inside lighting.

I'm not myself
I'm not myself
This photo again creates a story as you wonder how this model/character got herself to this place/situation. The fact her eye aren't in the photo makes you question why and again makes you come back and look to see if you can find answers even though your mind has made them up anyway. The photographer has used un-natural lighting in this photo as well to create contrast.

Get away from me
Get away from me
This photo is very similar to the one above and makes question if there anything to do with each other!

You may have noticed that the above photos don't have the models face on show - I personally think it adds to the question and i don't think any of them would work as well if the faces were showing.
PHOTO'S THAT INSPIRE ME

Photo One

  • This is a gorgeous photo and I'd like to take one this this, I'd need really good lighting so I'd need to take this photo around 12ish on a good day as it wouldnt work on a cloudy day or in the dark as i wouldn't get enough light from house lighting.

Photo Two

  • I really like this photo as it's very natural and her eyes catch your attension.
  • The focusing is also really effective in the way you focus on the model.
Photo Three

  • I love how simple this photo is and how her eyes drag your attension instantly.
Photo Four

  • I like the focusing in this photo and i would like to try this myself although I'd like to make the first person less focused.
  • I also like the colouring in this photo, i find it really effective.
Photo Five
  • Although this is taken in a studio and i don't have access to a studio but i like the shape of her body and the blank expression on her face.

Develop & Realise

QUICK PRACTICE
Although this is only a quick practice and not a photo I will be using, this is the contrast I was going for.
What steps I did:
  • Auto Contrast
  • Black and white
  • Contrast (-90)

CONTACT SHEET

I found this shoot very enjoyable and the models worked well with each other. The majority of the shots came out well and I'm happy with the photos I've chosen.
The contrast of the dresses works really well and i think they defiently bring out the models features.

CHOSEN PHOTO'S

EDIT'S

CHOSEN 12

These photo's represents my idea's well as they're very editorial although they aren't as contrasty as i wanted them, they didnt work as well when they were. These photo's were influenced by the photographer Meagan Cignoli with her unique photo's and model poses. My image's didn't work as well as hers as her's is very in your face and mine isn't as much although i feel mine works in different ways. My image's worked as well as Meagans because I find the eyes in mine are a lot more piersing than hers and I often find that eyes are most important in editorial photography. I wanted the viewer to find my models eyes quite intimitating and not being able to look away - I think i have achieved this as they are very bold.

After refering back to the photographer I chose to have at least one photo in your face just like meagans photo! I feel it has worked really well for this photo and the added colour from the braclets really work!

After looking back over the photo's I found some of them too flat so I re-edited some:
